Birdman Leads The Film Independent Spirit Award Nominations
The dark comedy “Birdman” leads the Film Independent Spirit Awards with 6 nominations. The nominations include best feature, best director and best male lead for Michael Keaton, best supporting actor for Edward Norton and best supporting actress for Emma Stone. “Birdman” stars Keaton as Riggan Thomson, a has-been former star of a super hero franchise who tries to jump start and legitimize his career by writing, directing and starring in a Broadway play.
Jenny Slate picked up a nomination for best female lead for starring in the romantic comedy, “Obvious Child“. The film was also nominated for best first feature honors.
Paul Thomas Anderson’s crime comedy “Inherent Vice” will receive this year’s Robert Altman Award which goes to the director, casting director and ensemble cast which includes Josh Brolin, Martin Donovan, Jena Malone, Joanna Newsom, Joaquin Phoenix, Eric Roberts, Maya Rudolph, Martin Short Serena Scott Thomas, Benicio Del Toro, Katherine Waterston, Michael Kenneth Williams, Owen Wilson and Reese Witherspoon.
Richard Linklater’s “Boyhood” which was 12 years in the making was nominated for 5 awards including a best feature, best director for Linklater and best supporting actor nomination for Ethan Hawke. Dan Gilroy’s “Nightcrawler” also brought in 5 nominations.
