As part of our new podcast sharing select archival episodes of Ron Bennington’s epic interview series Unmasked, this week we are featuring Unmasked with Louie Anderson. The Unmasked series which began in 2008 with a brilliant hour with Patrice O’Neal has taped nearly 200 episodes since, documenting the careers of the most interesting comedy writers, directors, filmmakers, actors, screenwriters, satirists, political comedians, comedic musicians and of course, stand up comedians in the business. It is a veritable archive of the greatest comedy of our time. Past Unmasked guests have included Joan Rivers, Bob Newhart, Amy Schumer, Dan Aykroyd, Simon Pegg, Tracy Morgan, Paul Feig, Jim Jefferies, Gilbert Gottfried, Bobcat Goldthwait, Louis C.K., David Brenner, Brian Regan, Patrice O’Neal and over 150 more comedy greats.
In this episode, Ron Bennington sits down with Louie Anderson in SiriusXM’s famous “fishbowl” studio to talk about his role on FX’s amazing series, Baskets. Anderson won the Emmy for his really brilliant role as Zach Galifianaki’s character’s mom Christine Baskets. At the time the episode was recorded, the season was just rolling out and people were just beginning to love the character. It’s an amazing hour, because Louie has had a career full of peaks and low points. He will always be known as a legend in the stand up universe but he also went through some rough years and so he has a wealth of different types of experiences to draw on. He talks about hearing from Louis C.K. about the part, and how he handled the role, but also goes way back to talk about growing up poor, his mom who we all feel like we know from his comedy, his alcoholic dad, how he got into comedy and so much more, and those stories are priceless.
We chose this episode because we really love Louie, but also because it was the perfect mix of gigantic laughs and really touching stories, and insight into one of the great comedic minds. But most of all, Louie got sentimental talking about inclusion and it was incredibly moving for everyone in the room, and will be for anyone who listens to the hour.
For anyone who doesn’t know Louie’s career, before he got the critically acclaimed role of Christine Baskets, he was already a brilliant and beloved stand up performer. He regularly sells out venues in Vegas and all over the country, hosted Family Feud for years, wrote three best selling books, and had a gigantic cartoon series, Life With Louie,
Louie is currently starring as Zach Galifianakis’ mom on FX’s critically acclaimed series Baskets, and as we wrote last week, his performance may just be the best thing on television right now. Before Baskets, you already knew Louie as one of the country’s top stand up comedians, who has been beloved since the 80’s, regularly selling out venues in Vegas and all over the country, and he was the host of Family Feud for three seasons. He’s also written three best selling books, recorded several stand up specials, and created the cartoon series, Life With Louie which was a giant hit in the 90’s. This episode of Unmasked was recorded on March 11, 2016.
