Most of our Unmasked releases come to you from the archives- a selection of our all time favorite hours. This week, we bring a brand new hour, Unmasked with Jo Koy, whose brand new Netflix special is elevating an already impressive career to the next level.

The Unmasked series which began in 2008 with an incredible hour with Patrice O’Neal, has taped nearly 200 episodes since, documenting the careers of the most interesting comedy writers, directors, filmmakers, actors, screenwriters, satirists, political comedians, comedic musicians and of course, stand up comedians in the business. It is a veritable archive of the greatest comedy of our time. Past Unmasked guests have included , Bob Newhart, , Dan Aykroyd, Simon Pegg, , Jim Jefferies, Bobcat Goldthwait, Louis C.K., David Brenner, , and over 150 more comedy greats.

The hour is hilarious, sweet, touching and smart, but it’s being praised around the internet for Koy’s candid and emotional conversation about his struggle to start his career, fighting his way up in a city with no comedy infrastructure for young performers starting out, and keeping that spirit alive as he made the decision to not only to produce his own special, but to produce it at the level of a major production company. Spoiler Alert- everything pays off, another confirmation of the reality of the “Netflix Effect.”

His stories about loving comedy as a kid are hysterical- he said his mom always would force him and his sister into talent shows, and how growing up as part of an immigrant family taught him how to hustle early on. This becomes a thread throughout the interview with Koy talking about always fighting for his own career and sometimes killing the careers of others (r.i.p. Dada!).

It’s an amazing episode– Koy is so funny, and so sincere, and has the perfect combination of gratitude and confidence and pride over all that he’s accomplished.  Yeah, there are tears in the hour, and it’s so touching.  But there are also huge laughs for comedy fans, and any comedian battling it out building their career, there’s so much here that you’ll want to hear.

Recorded on August 9, 2017 at SiriusXM’s headquarters in New York City in the famed Fishbowl studio, this is Unmasked with Jo Koy.
