Our new podcast sharing select archival episodes of Ron Bennington’s epic interview series Unmasked, and this week we chose an episode from earlier this year with Jim Norton.
The Unmasked series which began in 2008 with a brilliant hour with Patrice O’Neal has taped nearly 200 episodes, documenting the careers of the most interesting comedy writers, directors, filmmakers, actors, screenwriters, satirists, political comedians, comedic musicians and of course, stand up comedians in the business. It is a veritable archive of the greatest comedy of our time. Past Unmasked guests have included Joan Rivers, Bob Newhart, Amy Schumer, Dan Aykroyd, Simon Pegg, Tracy Morgan, Paul Feig, Jim Jefferies, Gilbert Gottfried, Bobcat Goldthwait, Louis C.K., David Brenner, Brian Regan, Patrice O’Neal and over 150 more comedy greats.
Ron Bennington and Jim Norton sat down in front of a sold out audience at New York City’s Village Underground to tape this episode. Norton is loved all over the country, and nowhere is that felt more than in New York City, where he lives, and its also his comedy home base. Not only does Norton perform more at New York’s Comedy Cellar than anywhere else, but he also broadcasts his radio show from New York City. This was Norton’s second time as a guest on Unmasked, he first sat down with Ron back in 2008 in Washington D.C..
This episode was taped during a transitional time for Norton, his morning radio show with Gregg “Opie” Hughes was coming to an end, but his new show, The Jim and Sam Show, which he co-hosts mornings on SiriusXM had not yet been announced. He also hosts a UFC podcast, has also had multiple appearances on FX’s Louie, appeared as a special correspondent on the Tonight Show when Jay Leno hosted, he’s taped two HBO specials and three specials that have aired on EPIX and hosted The Jim Norton Show for Vice. He’s also written two best selling books, has had a series of articles published in Time Magazine, recorded four albums, and has credits in several films. including Ricky Gervais’s upcoming movie.
Norton is taping a brand new special at the Skirball Center in New York City on December 17 and will headline the Tarrytown Music Hall on New Years Eve.
