Andy Kindler Thinks Ricky Gervais is a Jerk

Andy Kindler is already gearing up for 20th annual infamous Sate of the Industry address at the Just for Laughs Festival in Montreal.  On a recent episode of popular podcast  “Alison Rosen Is Your New Best Friend”, Kindler previewed his remarks for this year, taking big issue with the current state of comedian, producer, actor, filmmaker, and screenwriter Ricky Gervais.

Kindler is somewhat infamous for addressing what’s wrong with comedy in his act and his yearly Just For Laughs address. Last year for example he drew a lot of heat targeting radio host Anthony Cumia.  This year, Ricky Gervais is in his crosshairs.   He’s particularly upset with Gervais because, he says, he used to be a fan. Kindler explained to Alison Rosen,

“The things that get me the most upset are things that I actually liked at one time, like Ricky Gervais. I used to love the original ‘Office’, but then he became such a jerk that you can’t stop thinking about him as a jerk. He’s always bragging about how many mansions he has. He advocates for animals, which is cool, but [he posted online] ‘This is the only kind of trophy hunting that I believe in.’ and it’s a picture of him in front of his awards. And he loves these awards. If you’re a comedian, you’d better pretend you don’t love them that much. But he’s like all about…he’s about superficial outside in things. And he’s mean about people’s weight. I can’t stand any of that kind of thing.”

Kindler also thinks Gervais is dishonest.  “He says ‘I don’t care what people think’. Yeah, half of his tweets are ‘I don’t care what you think. What do I care what you think?’ But he obviously does care. Be honest about it.”

Kindler thinks he knows why Gervais has changed.  “It’s so obvious. You hate yourself and now you want to hate others.”
