Andy Daly Talks Sex Dolls on the Late Show

We know Andy Daly. He’s one of our favorite comedians and performers working today. As Stephen Colbert pointed out on the Late Show on Tuesday, his audience may know Andy from his different projects that he works on. While some may know him as Principal Brown, the man resigned to his life as an underappreciated and underpaid school administrator on Modern Family or as Colbert made people aware, the national spokesperson for CarMax. But it’s Andy Daly’s work on Review on Comedy Central that Stephen Colbert also wanted people to know about.

On Review, Andy Daly stars as Forrest MacNeil, the host and critic who puts himself through extreme life experiences, so that we don’t have to. After discussing, how CarMax really should get Andy a better ride, at least better than the dinged-up car he’s driving around in now, the conversation turned to Review and how that show bled into Andy Daly’s actual life.

Review is going into its third and final season and it seemed like the episode that Stephen Colbert was most interested in asking Andy Daly about was the one where he experienced love making with a $4000 hyper-realistic sex doll. Shooting that scene for Review wasn’t even the most embarrassing moment with the sex doll for Andy Daly, despite the doll’s button-on face popping off while filming and that the show had to borrow the sex toy store’s floor-model sex doll to use for the scene. What really turned Andy Daly’s face red is when he was in a coffee shop editing the sex doll scene on his laptop and realized people were watching over his shoulder. This is how Andy explained it, “So it’s them, watching a man watching himself have sex with a rubber doll and taking notes.” That’s just a day in the life of Andy Daly.

Andy Daly got his start in improv comedy with a troupe directed by Amy Poehler with the Upright Citizens Brigade in New York in 1998. He made the move to Los Angeles and is still doing improv work with a group of guys he started with, now called The Swarm along with Sean Conroy, Billy Merritt and Andrew Secunda. The group is an offshoot of the work he started doing with UCB and The Swarm performs the first Saturday of every month at UCB L.A. Sunset.
