Amazon Comedy Pilot Gets Two Season Pick Up

Last month, Amazon launched the pilot for their new series from Gilmore Girls creator Amy Sherman-Palladino, called The Marvelous Mrs. Maisel, to critical acclaim. Since March 16th, the show has garnered over 6,100 ratings on Amazon, with over 5,000 of them being five-star reviews, leaving the show at an impressive 4.9 out of 5 stars. The IBang’s own Lesley Coffin agreed with the consensus in her own review of the pilot, calling the show the “shining light of this crop of Amazon pilots” and saying that it “feels like the first show [Palladino’s] truly sculpted from top to bottom to be exactly what she wants it to be.” Well, Amazon has seen the wave of positive feedback surrounding the pilot and has responded in kind: The Marvelous Mrs. Maisel has just been greenlit for not one, but two more seasons, a first in Amazon history.

The show takes place in New York City in 1958, and tells the story of Miriam “Midge” Maisel, a wife and mother of two in the Upper West Side who has everything she’s ever wished for, until one day she doesn’t. Her life turned upside down, Midge discovers a talent she previously never knew she had: she can make people laugh. Thus begins her new career as a stand-up comic, one that will take her from the hole-in-the-wall clubs of NYC to Johnny Carson’s famed couch.

“In her onstage debut, Mrs. Maisel killed and had audiences responding overwhelmingly with digital applause,” said Joe Lewis, Amazon’s Head of Comedy, Drama & VR. “Like any great young stand-up, we’re excited to see what she has to say next and for a long time to come. That made it an easy decision to order two seasons from Amy and her incredible cast. We can’t wait to bring it to customers soon.”

The series also stars Tony Shalhoub (Monk) as Midge’s dad Abe, Alex Borstein (Family Guy) as Susie Myerson, Marin Hinkle (Two and a Half Men) as Midge’s mom Rose, and Michael Zegen (Boardwalk Empire) as Midge’s husband, Joel.

There’s no word on when the series can be expected to hit Amazon, so stay tuned to The IBang for more information as it comes!
