Amazon Dumps Three More Comedy Series

Tig Notaro’s One Mississipi Cancelled By Amazon

After deciding not to pick up any of the new comedy pilots released this season (most regrettably, Bridget Everett’s I Love You More), Amazon today announced it’s dumping three existing comedy series including Tig Notaro’s One Mississippi.  Tig’s series had two solid seasons with great reviews from critics, but either it wasn’t getting the kind of numbers Amazon is looking for, or the streaming network is just cleaning house in the wake of a change in the guard. Most likely a combination; Deadline reported today that an Amazon insider claimed it was part of a move toward series with larger audiences, which means smart but niche independent series will have to look elsewhere for homes in the future.

Also departing are Jill Soloway’s I Love Dick and Jean Claude Van Damme’s Jean-Claude Van Johnson. Amazon has now cleared out almost all of the comedy series. Remaining are their award winners- Transparent, Mozart in the Jungle, and newcomer The Marvelous Mrs. Maisel. All three series were developed through Amazons pilot program that allowed viewers to vote on their favorite pilots, although that program seems to be all but dead.  The only other comedy series staying at Amazon is The Tick which was just renewed.
