Amazon Acquires Rights to Lucille Ball Biopic; Cate Blanchett Tapped to Star

Amazon continues to expand into the originals market, with their announcement today that they’ve acquired the rights to the Lucille Ball biopic. Aaron Sorkin (HBO’s The Newsroom, The Social Network) will provide the script, while Cate Blanchett (Cinderella, The Lord of the Rings Trilogy) is being tapped to play Ball. Lucille Ball and Desi Arnaz’s children, Lucie Arnaz and Desi Arnaz Jr., have come on board to produce the film.

Lucille Ball needs no introduction. She was a multi Emmy-winning actress and producer behind various hit TV sitcoms such as I Love Lucy, Here’s Lucy, The Lucy Show, Life with Lucy, and The Lucy-Desi Comedy Hour. She’s a Television Hall of Fame inductee and a recipient of the Lifetime Achievement Award from the Kennedy Center Honors. A resident of Jamestown, New York, her legacy was the inspiration for the Lucille Ball-Desi Arnaz Center comedy museum and the Lucille Ball Comedy Festival, both of which take place in her hometown.
