A Call To Boycott Zoolander 2 Because of Trans Character
There is an online petition calling to boycott Zoolander 2 because one of the character’s is Trans and silly.
Sarah Rose, who created the petition wrote:
“In the Zoolander 2 trailer, an androgynous character played by Benedict Cumberbatch is asked by Zoolander and Hansel if he is a ‘male or female model,’ and if they ‘have a hot dog or a bun.’ Additionally, Cumberbatch’s character is clearly portrayed as an over-the-top, cartoonish mockery of androgyne/trans/non-binary individuals. This is the modern equivalent of using blackface to represent a minority.”
Rose says the creators of Zoolander could have approached actual Trans models if social commentary was their purpose in including the character. So far over 8,000 have signed the petition.
Some of the petitioners left comments. “Shame on Hollywood, which has the power to change perceptions but instead seizes every chance for mockery and dollars,” and “I hadn’t thought of this as offensive initially, and can see why others wouldn’t, which is why this needs to be drawn attention to.”
Other commenters disagreed with the petition. Neither Paramount nor Stiller has commented.
