42 Great Album Covers

The art of the album cover isn’t completely dead but it also isn’t what it used to be.  It might have something to do with the fact that for a long time, people stopped buying and selling albums.  But now that vinyl is back we’re hoping cover art makes a resurgeance.   In the meantime, here’s 42 Great Album Covers to remind you how great cover art once was.

i know lists are always subjective, but no “tool”?  they put out some of the most innovative album covers.  i wouldn’t bitch about it, but you have korn and neutral poo bottle, so i think tool would have fit on the list somewhere.

The original Appetite For Destruction album cover is so much better. I own it. The one shown is the puss version tht came out after complaints about the original. it’s actually a copy of the sticker that came with the original album. It’s only iconic cuz it sold so many copies.

    June 4, 2012 at 12:19 pm

Great list.  I agree that the album cover isn’t what it used to be, but I think that’s good b/c the media isn’t what it used to be.  Musicians like Autechre are working with visual artists to create album covers that are specifically designed to embrace our digital media.  And Bjork’s Biophilia, I think, really takes it to the next level.  With that album, the artwork is interactive, created for an iPad, released as a series of “apps.”  Like her or not, the album is a very different experience.  As far as the more traditional covers though, I would add: Joy Division’s Unknown Pleasures and Miles Davis’ Kind of Blue if only b/c both covers are iconic.  A Tribe Called Quest’s Low End Theory was also a personal favorite of mine.  I remember being a kid, staring at that cover, tracing the lines w/ my fingertips.

Seem of Peter Gabriel’s solo albums have great covers specifically “car”, “melt”, and security. It gets confuse since his first 3 albums are just called Peter Gabriel and the fourth was called security in the us but not abroad, either way cool covers
