They Didn’t Get the Part: Volume 1

Actors don’t always get the roles they try out for. Even the ones that go on to become stars. Here are some auditions that actors must have thought that they nailed only to find out later that the producers, studios or director wanted someone else for the part.

Superman: Stockard Channing as Lois Lane

If the audition had gone her way, Superman would have been flying across Metropolis with Rizzo from “Grease” instead of Margot Kidder.

Jumanji – Scarlett Johansson as Judy

This takes us back to the days when Kirsten Dunst was beating out Scarlett Johansson for movie roles. If Scarlett had upped her game – it could have stopped a run of Kirsten Dunst in “Spider-Man” movies.

The Godfather – Robert De Niro as Sonny Corleone

De Niro loses the part to James Caan, but impresses Francis Ford Coppola so much that he brings De Niro back for “The Godfather: Part 2″ to play young Vito Corleone.

Star Wars – Cindy Williams as Princess Leia

It’s hard to forget Cindy Williams isn’t still Shirley Feeney from “Laverne & Shirley” in this audition. She sounds like she should be talking about Boo Boo Kitty instead of R2D2.

Fame: The TV Series – Madonna as Doris

Madonna was already using the one-name gimmick and was a little over a year from her first album release. But she also wanted a TV series. Here she’s totally Madonna auditioning for the TV version of “Fame”.

The Amazing Spider-Man – Josh Hutcherson as Peter Parker

Josh Hutcherson got pretty far into the audition process for the part of the new Spider-Man. This is an elaborate fight sequence screen test with choreography, wires and stunt men. Josh lost the part to Andrew Garfield, but it wasn’t from his lack of being able to strike a Spider-Man pose.

Scarlett Johansson could be replaced with Kirsten Dunst? No way! I am glad she wasn't, i can't imagine Jumangii or Spiderman without Scarlet, she was pretty good. Its soundtrack still playing in my head - http://blablamp3.com/mp3/spiderman.html . Although on that tape Kirsten Dunst wasn't bad either, and she was very cute as a kid

Though I like Andrew Garfield he's way too pretty to be Peter Parker. That other guy looked more of what I'd imagine as him.

Well dang I might have actually liked The Amazing Spiderman if Hutcherson had been it. Pretty big maybe though, seeing how the script was still abominable and Peter was made into some hipster geek skinny-pant and oversized glasses-wearing douche.

Madonna for the win. Please include Jeremy Sisto in Volume 2 for his audition as Jack in TITANIC. He was fantastic, cute, & had great chemistry with Kate Winslet. I think Leo DiCaprio got the part based on his #THICKE connection from Growing Pains. Frankly, Sisto was the better actor at the time - he was a supporting principal in a Lawrence Kasdan film FFS, not too long before this Titanic audition. But that Canadian Thicke Dicke (sans foreskin) appears to be like the Wizard of Odd. Boo.

One of my favorite Jim Norton quotes is about Stockard Channing: "Zelda from Poltergeist would have made a more believable high school kid".

How about anyone attractive for Lois Lane?  What did they have against Superman?

Hey, Josh, how about you mix in some Clearasil before you go on an audition.

Don't even to look at the Cindy Williams audition. Carrie Fisher all the way.

@Freddy34096562 Kirsten Dunst is the actress that played the girl in Jumanji and Mary Jane in the three Spiderman movies...

@peon @steeb84 Really, any kid that wanted the part could have beaten that performance. It kinda sucked just because she didn't seem like she wanted to be there.
