Great Guest Performances from the Johnny Cash TV Show
The Johnny Cash Show was taped in Nashville at the Ryman Auditorium, home of the Grand Ole Opry. Airing on ABC from 1969-71, this show was truly groundbreaking television. At such a turbulent time in US history, Cash managed to unite the predominantly conservative country music audience with the peace-loving, hippie culture of folk and rock performers.
The first half of the show usually featured Johnny’s guests while the latter part featured Johnny, June and accompaniment by Carl Perkins & the Tennessee Three. We picked out some of our favorite guest performances.
- Ray Charles
- Louis Armstrong
- Creedence Clearwater Revival
- Linda Ronstadt
- Joni Mitchell
- Derek & the Dominos (joined by Johnny & Carl Perkins!)
- George Jones
- Pete Seeger
- Neil Young
- James Taylor
- Shel Silverstein
- Bob Dylan

My dad and I used to watch this together, been a Neil Young fan ever since his first album. Maybe this show is why I had a crush on Linda Ronstadt in the 70's. Coll stuff
The Nashville Skyline bootleg with Dylan and Cash is one of my favorite albums, so I'm probably bias in saying I thought Dylan's appearance was the best.
