Deke Richards (1944 – 2013)


deke_richardsDeke Richards, the leader of the Motown songwriting/production collective known as ‘The Corporation’, passed away yesterday after a bout with cancer.

After the acclaimed songwriting team Holland-Dozier-Holland left Motown to form their own label, Berry Gordy chose Richards to head a new team of producers and songwriters called ‘The Clan’. It was Richards would The Supremes hits ‘Love Child’ and ‘Livin’ In Shame’. the Supremes classic ‘Love Child’. Gordy would disband The Clain and would later assemble ‘The Corporation, which included Gordy, Richards, Freddie Perren and Alphonzo Mizell. They would score major hits for The Jackson 5 including the #1 singles ‘I Want You Back’, ‘ABC’ and ‘The Love You Save’ along with ‘Mama’s Pearl’, ‘Maybe Tomorrow’, and ‘Sugar Daddy’. Richards would also write hits for Bobby Darin, Martha & The Vandellas, The Blackberries, and Stacie Johnson.

Deke Richards was 68.

Supprised they called themselves "The Clan" back in the 70's

Never heard of the guy before today, but that list of songs is amazing.  Seems like a life well-lived.
