It's a conversation starter, but also an ender. As in " thanks for coming in today, but it appears that the position you were interviewing for has been filled. We will call you if anything else opens up."
While I agree with your premise that hes a dumb-ass, if I met someone with a Bob Dole or Dukakis tattoo I could guarantee it would come up in the topic of our conversation
