Censorship Watch: Patton Oswalt Weighs In on Tosh Detractors

Jul 15, 2012

Patton Oswalt defended not so much Daniel Tosh but Daniel Tosh’s right to speak. “Obviously, I don’t agree with what he said, and I don’t agree with the way he said it, but there’s something really, really dangerous about [reacting to] something you don’t like by shouting it down so it’s not heard.” He went on to say that P.C. critics on the left can be as bad as the assholes on the right. “It’s no different than what radical Christians, anti-gay assholes and pro-life people do,” he said. “They try to yell things out of existence.”

I would like to say great for Patton Oswalt for supporting Daniel Tosh's right to free speech but no he took this opportunity to say how cool he is and how uncool everyone else who doesn't think like hisself.  So to flip flop like Oswalt I would like to say you suck as a stand up but I really like your acting.

Oswalt is sooo brave that he has to begin his defense with "Obviously I don't agree..."  Man up you pussy, and defend free speech, whether you agree or disagree is irrelevant.  The point is that speech shouldn't be censored by govt. or the private sector through politically correct, economic intimidation.

@Mikfin At least he's bringing it up.  And the point that you're referencing is the same as his, no?

@DonnieIris Free speech shouldn't be a right or left thing, yet Oswalt was compelled (apparently) to bring it up to make sure that everybody knows he is on the "right" (correct) side.  He's a pussy.

@DonnieIris I'd suggest the pot and kettle metaphor but it wouldn't work since I did make sense.

Fight the Good Fight Pat! Start a Rally to keep "free speech" in comedy ALIVE my brother (but keep your focus on Stand-Up... there's no use trying to fix ALL the broken groups in America just yet LOL..)

Cliche at this point,  Patton.  Time to beat a new dead horse.

@elephant_droid >>>Time to beat a new dead horse. << Does that mean that the Christians are done

trying to push their agenda ?  Great news

Everyone pushes their agenda. Patton is pushing his agenda.

Taking shots at Christians and anyone who believes in God is trendy. Just like in the 90's it was cool to act black. 00's it was trendy for women to be bisexual.

Although there is that P.C. you have to maintain with Islam..."not all of them are terrorists, stop grouping them together, they have a right to practice their religion. don't be condescending" - same can and should be said about Christians, Jews, Atheists, Pagans, Wickens, Buddhists, you get the idea....over P.C. is censorship

Patton is making the same hack joke just like joking that priests are pederasts, the asshole at work that makes jokes about people in prison dropping the soap, white people can't dance, women be shopping', the real estate agent that shows two closets in the master bedroom and says, "Here are hers and hers closets...lol...where are you going to put your stuff, honey?"

Just saying be original and Patton is better than that.

@SteveAsher  @DonnieIris I liked his answer and you are right, it is frustrating and overdone about someone having every word picked apart when it is just something they say off the cuff or during an interview

I'm just saying that his choice of groups is a frequently used example. But agree, it is off the cuff.

@DonnieIrisI agree. It was a verbal response in a conversational setting.  It wasn't a calculated written "statement".  Yet some will rip apart each word and criticize his agenda, as if anyone but Patton knows what his agenda is.  Eventually people in influential roles will cease to speak their mind at all, for fear of having each word dissected.  We all hate canned, cliche celebrity answers, yet we rip these guys apart when they answer a question honestly.

@elephant_droid Did you read the quote?  He said RADICAL Christians.  Furthermore, he wasn't making a joke at all.  It's just a statement on how certain segments of society, regardless of creed, are entirely too sensitive and detrimental to free expression.

Tosh has learned a lesson, when you're super popular, there are more assholes that know about you.
