Jay Mohr Talks About His ‘Calling’ To Faith & Laments Athiests‘ ’Child-Like’ Rejection of God

Jun 30, 2012

If you are a Jay Mohr fan ( who isn’t?) you will want to read Jay’s exclusive interview with The Blaze. He’s a practicing Catholic and even though his views are ” unconventional ” it seems to be working for him. Lucky for Jay he doesn’t have to accept the entire Catholic doctrine, he is able to pick out the stuff he really likes.

Good for Jay.

What he believes in makes exactly zero difference to me.

I don't understand why people have to believe there is some "higher" power. Is it so they can feel better when bad things happen? if there was a "merciful God" then kids wouldn't get life threatening diseases, abused or killed. I don't know how anyone that has witnessed or dealt with any of these things could believe, it must just be ignorance.

Comedy and Catholicism don't mix....well unless it's about all the members of the church and the people who follow them lol

I'll never understand Mohr's insecurity and need to be accepted and loved by everyone.  I guess that goes for a large number of celebrities as well, though.

Hey Whatever Floats your Boat....I just have a problem with an organization that refuses to acknowledge the pedophilia of their priests.  Their if we pretend it doesn't exist ...it will all go away attitude disgusts me....Plus I'd be a rich man today except apparently I wasn't an attractive enough altar boy back in the day!?

i wonder if this is the source of Fez and Jay's uncomfortable-ness??

Did Cox or he say something to Fezzie to make him less accepting of himself? I'm hoping it didn't confuse his feelings.

Anyways when Jay called in I thought he was mostly hilarious and it was good to get behind the scenes of his life a little.

Love ya Fezzie

@Colorado Jeff Jay asked Ron to come on the podcast, and Fez said he wouldn't let Ron do it.  I think that was the culmination of the uncomfortability.  It may have started when Jay bought Fez flowers.

If religion makes jay feel good then good for him. As long as it doesnt interfer with his funny voice jokes and barry katz interviews i could give a fuck.

I wish I could read the article before my glass typewriter crashes everytime I open it.

I try to be open minded, but i just get so irritated by this. What do Chistians say to devout Muslims that think Christians are going to hell? Flip the script. "What ever gets you though the night" doesn't work because of the implied idea that everyone else is going to hell. To quote Penn Jelette, "I don't know is a perfectly fine answer."

@Evboat Christianity has gotten mighty soft these days. They would probably spout some drivel about "interfaith dialogue", but yeah, if yeah--- if  you genuinely believed that non christians are going to burn in hell, then wouldn't the only logical course of action be to go totally old school, gather up a mighty army of god and go crusading through the world wiping out all other religions?  If you don't wouldn't you basically be condeming everyone to an eternal pit of boiling lava and devil pitchforks for all of eternity??? Luckily I don't think most people actually believe in these fairy tails even if they won't admit it.

@AnthonyLoman If there's a comedian that speaks to me 100% it is the Louie episode showing him in Catholic school as a kid. Maybe laughed only once but one of my favorite episodes.

The podcast the article references is absolutely brilliant.  It has become chic to attack anyone religious as if there's something wrong with loving your neighbor.  Jay knows that as well as anyone, especially since he's in Hollywood, yet he chooses to speak his mind and not be afraid to say what he believes.  Jay was attacked by Havey, and he stood his ground without getting aggressive and explained exactly why he did what he did.  Good for him.

By the way, his podcast is phenomenal, especially when he says he wants to do interviews like Ron Bennington.

@Narc Zito I don't think anyone has ever had a problem with the "love thy neighbor" part, unless the neighbor happens to be an altar boy.  In fact, of all the religious rhetoric that's been thrown around over the last few years, I'd forgotten about the "love thy neighbor' part.  I've listened to a lot of Jay over the years and I'm surprised to hear this.  He would certainly seem to be in the 'cherry picker' camp that follows the parts of the bible that he agrees with and discards the rest.

@Punk0 Christians (and Catholics in particular) seem to be a very easy target.  Most Catholics are not child molesters.  Most Catholics do not condone any such behavior.  And remember that Catholics do not necessarily use the Bible as the end-all-be-all for religious doctrine.  I think that's the Protestants.

@Narc Zito They seem to be an easy target because the men in power have made them an easy target.  No one ever said the majority of Catholics, or even priests are child molesters, but the official method of dealing with the problem was to keep it quiet and send the molester to a different parish.  And not using the Bible as the end-all-be-all is my problem with this.  If you truly believe it, then it's supposed to be the end-all-be-all.

Ahh, this is why I never found Jay Mohr funny.  Even women are funnier then Christians.

I was raised catholic. Love all the creepy mystical shit, dead Saint's severed limbs in jars ("relics"), creepy secret societies, exorcisms, extravagant European cathedrals.

My ONLY problem with religion, is that I can't see how any fully grown, mentally sound adult can honestly believe a nice bearded man in a cloud city created reality and telepathically reads our thoughts and answers our problems like some weird help desk at the DMV.

I'm right there with Jay, Catholics who like to pick the good parts and leave the hateful shit for the 'Christians.'

So it's ok for Jay to express his beliefs but it's not ok for atheists to express their non-belief? Typical Christian...

I don't see where he says he finds anything morally wrong with atheists expressing what they believe. He's just saying what makes more sense to him.
