200+ Comics Gather for “Women in Comedy” Photo Shoot
This weekend, 200+ female comedians gathered at Littlefield in Brooklyn for a comedy first: a “class picture” of many of NYC’s female comics. The women, organized by comedian Jessica Delfino, make up a huge cross-section of the comedy world in NYC, from improv comics, to stand-ups, to writers and musicians.
Delfino put out the call on Facebook for any female-identifying comic to come to the venue, wearing whatever they’d like, for a series of photos and videos being shot by infamous NYC comedy photographer Mindy Tucker. The comics who showed up were featured in a partly staged video, solo “senior class portraits,” and the group photo. Those who couldn’t make it were told to submit selfies to Tucker, to be featured in the “could not attend” section of her site.
The crowd present at Littlefield that night were a colorful bunch, taking advantage of the loose dress code to sport everything from vintage dresses, to fur hats, wedding gowns, and rabbit ears. Speaking to Splitsider.com, Delfino had this to say of the group: “The photo really shows our diversity in one quick slice: black, white, Asian, Italian, short, tall, large, waif-ish, gay, straight, nerdy, athletic, moms, stand-ups, characters, improvisers, comedic musicians… We are everywhere, we do it all.”

The event was coordinated by Delfino in conjunction with The Creek and The Cave owner Rebecca Trent, booker/producer Marianne Ways, Late Show with Stephen Colbert digital producer Carol Hartsell, and a host of others who helped bring the production together. The organizers accepted donations to help cover the costs of the $2,000 worth of equipment required to create the final product.
Apparently, all of the comics got along well and the entire production went off without a hitch. After some set-up, the comics gathered on the risers and waited for Tucker to ascend her ladder, which was required to get high enough to get the whole group in the shot. “I’ve been in comedy a long time and this has never happened before,” said Tucker, sending the group into applause and helping everyone put on their nicest picture face.
If you’d like to check out the photo series, you can find it on Mindy Tucker’s website.
